PhD Scholarship Opportunity – Oat Crop Genomics and Sustainability

Project Overview


Oats are increasingly recognised as a sustainable, health-promoting crop that requires minimal water and nitrogen inputs—resulting in lower carbon emissions and reduced dependence on agrochemicals. This project aims to develop next-generation oat varieties with enhanced nutritional quality, environmental sustainability, and agronomic performance.


The successful candidate will join a dynamic, multidisciplinary research team at Murdoch University’s School of Science, working in close collaboration with Meta-Matters Pty Ltd and national research partners. The project integrates crop genetics, genomics, molecular biology, bioinformatics, and AI-driven modelling to accelerate breeding and trait discovery for the future oat industry.

 

 

Candidate Requirements


We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate with a strong academic background and enthusiasm for innovation in agricultural biotechnology. Applicants with expertise in the following areas are particularly encouraged to apply:

  • Crop genetics, genomics, or plant biochemistry
     
  • Computational biology, AI, machine learning, or modelling
     
  • Bioinformatics, molecular biology, or related fields
     

Eligibility Criteria


  • Master’s degree or First-Class Honours (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline
     
  • Demonstrated research or professional experience in plant science, genomics, or data-driven modelling
     
  • Strong teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills
     
  • Prior experience in AI applications, crop genomics, or molecular techniques will be highly regarded

Our undergraduate traineeships offer students an unparalleled opportunity to immerse themselves in an innovative setting and gain valuable skills and experiences unique to our program.


Key Information

Undergraduate traineeships are designed to provide students with an immersive experience in a dynamic environment, equipping them with skills and knowledge not available elsewhere. These placements, which may include Honours project supervision, are a compulsory or elective component of undergraduate tertiary studies.


Placements typically last between 3 to 12 months and span a range of research and non-research functions. Placements vary each year and depend on the projects available at the time of inquiry.

By engaging with industry, university, and CSIRO while pursuing your studies, you gain access to our leading researchers and mentors. This placement offers practical experience in your field of interest and allows you to fulfil a compulsory or elective component of your tertiary studies.


Requirements and Eligibility

Applicants must demonstrate satisfactory academic performance. Supervisors need assurance that international students have sufficient funds to cover travel and living expenses in Australia. It is recommended that international applicants visit the Australian Government website 'Study in Australia' for more information.


To be considered for an undergraduate traineeship, you must:


Be enrolled in an Associate, Bachelor, or Honours degree.

Have a course with a compulsory or elective placement contributing to course credit, including Honours project supervision.

Before commencing your placement, you and your university supervisor must sign a three-way student agreement.
